Symmetry and Balance in Error Messages

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Nobody likes error messages.  But I spotted a fab variation on them from Adriana’s site of  Fantastic Haiku.

Reminded me of the Japanese poetry in the Books about Muraski I particularly like The Tale of Murasaki a fictionalised history of the real lady who wrote Tale of Genji.

How well am I doing?

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

B.L. Ochman has written the 12 tenets of Social Media Marketing.

She is good, well-read, top blogger and an inspiration.
How well am I doing?

1 - OK - building my public.  Need more of you reading me.
2 - working on this.  Hiring PR agency to help me out for the print side. BCP
3 - quite good for rowing stuff.  Not yet there for business commentary.
4 - rock on!  Strongly UK for me.  Global for rowperfect.
5 - you tell me.  How am I on this?
6 - I get responses so it can’t be all bad.
7 - ditto
8 - no chance, me and my big mouth!
9 - never happened yet!
10 - weeellll.  needs more work.  Even some work would be good here.
11 - comment at will - say it the way it is, Please?
12 - no way.

Social Media and PR - death combo?

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Everyone loves a good / bad social media versus the PR industry story.  Well this one involves Microsoft and Wikipedia.  Opposite ends of the IT industry - paid versus free, David versus Goliath.

Here’s a good summary of the issues from B.L. Ochman.

BUT really - why do it?  The clear answer is public honesty and user group approval for products.
if you ain’t got good enough products you can’t spin the story without getting found out.
Full Stop.  End of Story.

Think about it.  How good are my products?  Are they written up in Wikipedia?  Could my best customers write the Wikipedia entry for me?  And would I blog about the experience?

P.S. reminder to self.  Get on and do this for Rowperfect!!!
P.P.S. it isn’t my company, I’m just the UK agent.  But I could do with more publicity online for the product and so maybe I should pull my finger out and do it!

Why I love The Economist Magazine

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

The Economist is a fantastic magazine for many reasons.  Great reportage, fairly little bias, worldwide news coverage, fantastic features.

But it lets itself down by only allowing subscribers to read its comments online.  I have chosen to share my subscription with you for the article below.  It’s great - an example of the magazine becoming a trusted source of information in a new arena - office computing.

I have read its news and research reports for years.  But until I read this, I would never have considered finding great links to useful products from its pages.

This article tells you how to bypass a password protected PC (particularly if the user has left your company in a huff and taken the password with him).

Let me know if you successfully use the products recommended!

Democracy alive and well!

Monday, January 29th, 2007

I have just been asked to sign a petition to the Government asking for the release of census data after 70 not 100 years.  Seemed a reasonable cause, particularly for my cousin Errol who’s compiling our family tree.

Having done my bit, I then browsed around the site and found this List of Petitions.  This is marvellous  True Brit dogged determination and eccentricity alive and well in the 21st Century.

Now, who wants to demand….

  • Two new series of Dr Who
  • Ramblers to carry red flags when walking on roads
  • Prevent shops opening on Boxing day
  • Removal of the statue of Cromwell from Westminster Hall

Rather worryingly, there are also

Yikes!

Hey, that’s democracy at work.

P.S. if you want to help Errol with her petition it is http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/censusinfofreed Deadline to sign up by: 08 March 2007 – Signatures: 14,290 so far.

Change your Agency business model

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

When I worked with Americans during the dot.com boom they were over-fond of the phrase ‘business model’  The discussion usually focused on how an online business could destroy your offline company.

Well, since then, most of us set up websites and those selling physical goods set up online shops.

The new threat comes from a different area: consumers bypassing traditional brand communication channels to market.  When a consumer and a brand can speak directly to each other - who needs an advertising agency, a PR agency, a direct marketing agency?

The IPA has published a report recognising this issue and making some rather broad-brush and namby pamby suggestions about how agencies can counter this threat.  Re-inventing the Agency
