A rather long but very insightful and informative post from my friend, Mark McGuinness on how to keep your team motivated during a recession.

I particularly enjoyed his four states of motivation and the list of things that people "lose" when they get laid off.

when I was running a team I found these things useful:

  1. short term goals
  2. unexpected nice surprises (take the afternoon off, bunch of flowers, go for dinner with your partner and expense it)
  3. letting someone different chair the team meeting
  4. set aside a small budget for bright ideas from team membes that you personally wouldn't choose to do and which may fail.  Let them do it.
  5. telling senior colleagues about my team members' individual successes and hearing the praise come back to them
