A rather long but very insightful and informative post from my friend, Mark McGuinness on how to keep your team motivated during a recession.
I particularly enjoyed his four states of motivation and the list of things that people "lose" when they get laid off.
when I was running a team I found these things useful:
- short term goals
- unexpected nice surprises (take the afternoon off, bunch of flowers, go for dinner with your partner and expense it)
- letting someone different chair the team meeting
- set aside a small budget for bright ideas from team membes that you personally wouldn't choose to do and which may fail. Let them do it.
- telling senior colleagues about my team members' individual successes and hearing the praise come back to them
