I mentor a PR student called Wendy and she's finding it hard to get a job. I sent her a link to the Shine Communicaiton s blog where an intern was so impressed with the company that she started a blog all about them…. and that got me thinking about how Wendy can improve her chances of getting noticed in the job market.
She wants to work in Sports PR, preferably for a sport team. She's based in the US – although that doesn't really affect the advice I gave her. Here it is
Wendy
Here are three things for you to do.
1. Job applications
Take a look at the companies that gave you rejections and the ones you've already done work experience for.
List all the good points
List all the bad or not so good pointsPick one or two companies to focus on. Find all the places online where they hang out
1. is there a Facebook group for them
2. check out Linked In and see if you can find people who used to work there or currently work there
3. Go to Zoominfo.com and research the people and the organisationWhen you have a good list send it over to me and we’ll discuss what to do next when approaching them..
2. Write five questions to ask each person who works at these companies
3. Get into some online groups for your preferred sports and for PR firms.
Read this post on my blog about how social media is a tool for PR firms.
Research and join some online groups for sports that you know a bit about. E.g. Tennis , P2PRSend me a list of sites you’ve found to join that align with sports you really know about.
My intention is to help her plan a campaign to get noticed by these companies and sports teams.
Any advice for Wendy?

[...] Tips for finding a first job in PR [...]
These are great suggestions; informational interviews can often lead to another contact or an opportunity to job shadow or internship. The more people you know, and the more you know about the field the better your chances of finding a job. People always say that it really about who you know more than what you know; I say it’s better to have both. Thanks for the great information, I hope Wendy got a job in Sports PR
