This is a rant.  Click away now if you aren’t ready for one.

It is well known that many charity christmas cards return little cash back to the charity – sometimes as little as 40p in the £ for UK charities.  I found this out while working with Sreepur who supply hand-made cards made by Bangladeshis to support the orphanage Sreepur Village “Shishu Polli Plus” that I used to work for in my gap year.

And so many companies rightly, decide to send an e-card and ‘make a donation’ to a named charity inst4ead.  Nice thought and I’ve received several of these from clients this year.  But they never say how much the donation is.  Which kinda pisses me off because it could be a tenner – which is measly or even £100 is far less than the cost of buying and mailing all those cards.

And then there’s companies like this and this who use the card as a sales tool.  F**k off.  The most junior communications person could tell you not to mix the purpose of your messaging like that.

So I was delighted to get one from a CRM tech supplier who invited me to click a link which would donate 10p to two local charities in Somerset.  So I did – a couple of times.  And here’s the result.

I hope they tell us how much was raised through this campaign.

What are your christmas card niggles?
